FP-9

Overview

The FP-9 is a Ukrainian ballistic missile made by Fire Point. According to the manufacturer, it delivers a warhead of up to 800 kg over up to 855 km at speeds of up to 2,200 m/s. The missile was announced in September 2025 together with the FP-7, a full-scale mock-up was shown in April 2026, and in September 2026 it was in flight testing.

History

The FP-9 was developed by the Ukrainian company Fire Point, maker of the long-range FP-1 drone and the FP-5 Flamingo cruise missile. The missile was first announced, together with the lighter FP-7, on 4 September 2025 at a press conference during the MSPO international defence exhibition in Kielce, Poland. The company described it as a weapon for striking targets deep behind enemy lines.

In March 2026 the company's co-founder and chief designer Denys Shtilerman said its engineers were finishing the missile's engine and that testing was planned to begin in early summer. On 27 April 2026 Fire Point showed a full-scale FP-9 mock-up for the first time, at a defence exhibition in Rzeszów, Poland; at that point the company expected codification with Ukraine's Ministry of Defence in summer 2026.

Design and specifications

According to the manufacturer, the FP-9 carries a warhead of up to 800 kg over up to 855 km. The missile reaches 2,200 m/s, climbs to up to 70 km and stays in flight for up to 520 seconds; its stated circular error probable is about 20 m. According to Shtilerman, the missile is still faster than 1,200 m/s in the terminal phase, which in his view makes it harder to intercept.

The missile is about 9.5 m long and up to 1.1 m in diameter. For comparison, the Russian 9M723 missile of the Iskander-M system is about 7.2 m long and 0.95 m in diameter. The large size is needed to carry enough propellant to deliver a heavy warhead more than 800 km. It is launched from a mobile truck-based ground launcher.

Testing

In an interview on 3 June 2026 Shtilerman said that everything for the FP-9 was ready except the engine, which was due to be tested in June, after which test flights would begin. According to him, about 10 missiles were to be built first for testing, with output to grow after codification. In late June 2026 Reuters, citing the company, reported that flight tests were planned for the summer and field trials for the autumn.

On 10 September 2026 Fire Point CEO Iryna Terekh said the FP-9 was in its second stage, flight testing. Moving to the third stage would take longer, she said, because Ukraine lacks the space to test such a long-range missile. As Texty explained, the FP-9 has a minimum ballistic flight distance after which it cannot be stopped by software. As of September 2026 there had been no confirmed combat launches of the FP-9.

Production

According to the company, the FP-9's key components, including the navigation system and servos, are made in-house, and the design uses only one foreign component. Fire Point is building up its own solid rocket fuel production: in August 2026 it said it had tripled its investment in a plant in Denmark to €150 million, with operations due to start in late 2027. The company also showed the FP-9 mock-up at DALO Industry Days in Denmark in August 2026.
